Science and Nature

Today almost everything is possible. The knowledge of science has developed a lot during the past decades, and the progress in heart transplants, cloning and keeping people alive has been huge. We have reached a stage where the man goes against the natural order, trying to safe lifes - but how far should we actually allow ourselves go in the order of this case? Is it right to keep a deathly ill person alive for years, to take out a beating heart, or to duplicate living creatures?

When it comes to heart transplants, we have no doubts - it is a perfectly ethical acceptable procedure, that saves an enormous amount of people anually. There has been quite a lot of fuss about the fact, that to make the transplant, you have to take out a beating heart from another body. Of course this leads to some considerations, especially since the heart in our culture is seen as the holder of the soul and the feelings - and to cut it out while it's still breathing certainly is crossing a line. But we must remember that the heart is nothing but a big muscle, and if a braindead person has a perfectly well working example of this, it should indeed be given to rescue another human being. 


Another issue is the fact that we can now keep people alive for years, even though they are seriously ill and has next to nothing left to live for. This is a bit more tricky. Of course it must be hard for a doctor to decide to end a life when he actually has the ability to make it last - but it should be done, if the patient wanted so. People are - most of the time - allowed to rule their own lifes - they should also be allowed to make decisions about their own death.


Cloning? Well, we think this phenomenon is quite creepy - to make copies of living creatures, eventually maybe even human beings! This really freaks us out. We understand the scientists' urge to explore the opportunities of nature mixed with science - but we just see cloning as something so fundementally wrong, so much against both ethics and nature.



A question a lot of people also discuss is, if it's acceptable to end the life of a unborn child by abortion. Some people think that it's strictly wrong to end a life - no matter the situation of the mother or condition of the child.

In some countries they have laws against abortion. Such as highly religous countries, especially the catholic communities they even forbid people to use protection during sex. Though there are other countries where it is allowed, like here in Denmark, where we have the freedom to decide whether we want to keep the child or to get an abortion.

We think that abortions should be legalized all over the world. Because no child would appreciate its life if the mother didn't want it e.g. If a girl in young age gets pregnant and can't get an abortion, she ruins both her own and her childs life. Another example could be if a girl is raped and gets pregnant, then she wouldn't have the opportunity to abort. We understand that it's a question about higher religions and human nature, but we still can't relate totally to the people who's against it.

Here in Denmark we have 15000 abortions a year where girls have decided not to have a child and there could be many reasons why that decision was made. It could be because she's too young, it could be a rape or maybe she's just not ready to have a child. Many times the mother does it in order to protect her child from the bad life that she would give it. The mother does it with no bad intentions, but feels that it's the best thing to do both for the child and her self.

All in all we think that the scientific development is a good thing, but there should be limits and we must make sure that the possibilities are not abused.
